Thomas Butcher Square Pianoforte Monopod style

London Square made by Thomas Butcher piano sculpted rosewood ending on one griffin foot monopod stand circa 1840

Thomas Butcher London Square Piano made circa 1840

Unusual formed early square piano made by Thomas Butcher of London. Not much is known about this maker but registers do show his business existing up to about 1850.

Formed in what in French is called a ‘Gueridon’ or what I would call in English a Mono-pod stand. An excellent example of the class one would represent in the early Victorian Era. Sculpted case of beautiful Rosewood supported on a Mono pod support circled by Acanthus Leaves. Feet in form of Griffon feet.

It is known that in 1839 at the the late Exhibition of the Produce of French Industry, 67 masters sent nearly 200 pianos, amongst which were several of an entirely new shape such as table, gueridon, oval, hexagon and consol
